Bacon Wrapped Maple Scallops #SundaySupper

These Maple Wrapped Scallops may be a bit elegant for the “Big Game” fare, but they are exactly the sort of tasty morsels I love to serve to my friends. The guys hover around the TV rooting for their favorite team and I’m typically in the kitchen with my girlfriends sipping on a crisp glass of Sauvignon Blanc trying to show a modicum of restraint around these irresistible appetizers. I made this scallops recipe for my book club years ago…and received the ultimate compliment. While biting into one of these bacon wrapped gems, one friend commented that these rivaled the seafood you’d find at the finest restaurant. And the bonus is that they are extremely simple to make!

This week’s Sunday Supper theme is Game Day Entertaining & Pairings. When having a party, we always have beer for the hubby, plus white and red wine. With munchies and appetizers, I find Sauvignon Blanc to be a perfect pairing. Gallo Family Vineyards has a lovely version at a great price point. Floral and fruity, it was perfect with these succulent scallops. The marinade is incredible…with the maple highlighting the sweetness of the seafood, the soy complementing their brininess, and the Dijon adding a hint of complexity without screaming mustard. Easy and wonderful. Cheers!

Check out all all the wonderful recipes for your next big bash from my Sunday Supper friends…along with the perfect wine recommendations for each:

Bacon Wrapped Maple Scallops
Ingredients
  • ¾ cup real maple syrup
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 12 large sea scallops
  • 12 slices of bacon
  • 2 tablespoons of brown sugar

  1. Whisk together maple syrup, soy sauce, and mustard. Add scallops and marinate one hour.
  2. Partially cook the bacon, it should still be pliable. Let cool slightly.
  3. Preheat oven to 375º. Line baking sheet with foil for easier clean up if desired.
  4. Wrap a slice of bacon around each scallop using a toothpick to secure. Place on baking sheet. Sprinkle with brown sugar.
  5. Bake till scallops are opaque and bacon is crisp, 10-15 minutes, turning at the half way point.
  6. Serve warm.
Yield:12 servings
Total time: 1 hour 15 minutes
Note: You can double the number of appetizers by cutting both the scallops and the bacon in half.

  16. I’m actually thinking these should show up on my Valentine’s Day menu! Although my 3 year old will want to devour them all and I won’t want to share.

  17. You can not put me in front of bacon wrapped scallops because I will eat them all!

  18. Maybe too elegant for some, but I would certainly enjoy them too!

  19. Ooh, I’ve been craving scallops for a while. It certainly is a different appetizer for game day but I think anybody at that party would be sold once tasted.

  20. Am running up to Pier 46 Seafood in Templeton today to buy scallops for my Grammy Awards supper. Will purchase a couple of the little guys to try this appetizer. Go Broncos.

  23. Bacon + Scallops = total flavor! Such a great combo. These looks terrific — definitely something I’d enjoy. Thanks.

  24. What gorgeous scallops! I love them prepared like this, but I usually order them in restaurants! LOL Maybe I should give them a try at home!

  25. We had something very similar, minus the maple, as an appetizer at our wedding. They were the biggest hit! I didn’t get any on the big day. Definitely want to make some of these.

  26. Elegant or not, I’d totally eat a plate of these for Game Day with my wine.

  27. This is Ryan’s favorite type of appetizer. Thank you for sharing them with me! I hope you have a blessed start to your week!

  28. These look PERFECT, and so elegant. I think game day food can be sort of fancy, and I would totally serve these at my party (if I was having one) :)

  29. Irresistable!

  30. Your scallops look beautifully prepared :D

    Cheers

  31. Your scallops do look divine, Liz. I bet they do rival the offerings of any fine restaurant. Thank you for sharing the how-to!

  33. Bacon wrapped Scallops with Maple!!! Oh my, what a GREAT idea, Liz. I love them but would have never thought to include maple syrup. Perfect!

I use to be a huge Gallo fan, I’m not sure what happened but I will surely try them again. Thanks for sharing, Liz…

  34. This sounds like a great appetizer to serve! I love scallops!

  35. How interesting, Liz… I wouldn’t have thought of teaming bacon with scallops… sounds delicious!

  36. I just started cooking scallops last year (I do believe it was for a #SundaySupper challenge to try something new.) and we love them. That maple marinade sounds wonderful and I love the addition of bacon. Bacon makes everything better!

  37. I love the look of these and I can imagine they would go very well with a lovely chilled glass of white wine and that they would disappear fast. My husband is very much a fan of bacon with scallops but we’ve never tried it with maple syrup xx

  38. These are a great party food, Liz.

  39. I love scallops and this looks amazing with the bacon! Love this, what a great combination Liz :)

  40. My husband and I always have bacon wrapped scallops when we’re celebrating something….birthdays, anniversaries, etc. But, I’ve never tried them with maple. I think I’ll have to give your recipe a try just to mix up our favorite dish. Not much of a football fan myself, but I will definitely be indulging on some of the snacks.

  41. This is too weird. I was at the dentist today and the hygienist was talking about some bacon wrapped scallops she had recently that tasted like they had been marinated in maple syrup! I’m so sending this her way!

  42. Way to elevate game day appetizers Liz!!! Love the wines also!

  43. Oh boy…totally irresistible!

  44. If I could have these I would attend a football party!

  45. I’m absolutely a seafood lover. Bacon scallops have to be devoured at your place! Yum!
It’s a tough call about the wine pairing. Sometimes, I think you go chardonnay or sauvignon blanc to match the scallop. Sometimes a pinot noir because the bacon takes such a prominent place on the palate.

    Cheers!
