Holiday Cream Cheese Tea Ring…#SundaySupper, #HomefortheHolidays

by Liz Berg on December 23, 2012

We are looking back at our holiday traditions for this week’s #Sunday Supper…those dishes that evoke memories of happy celebrations. I started making this tea ring when I was a newlywed. It is still my go to choice for an easy breakfast for company or holidays. The recipe came from my mom, taken off a bag of frozen Rhodes sweet dough. It’s simply delicious…and so, so easy to prepare. I usually don’t use baking shortcuts, but time is tight around the holidays and I always want to prepare something sweet and memorable for breakfast…so having a stash of frozen bread dough in the freezer is a definite time saver. I can no longer find this Rhode’s product, but any frozen bread dough will do…defrost it overnight in the fridge and give yourself about 2 hours the next morning for rolling, filling, cutting, rising and baking. My youngest sleeps till noon, even on Christmas, so I have plenty of time to bake up a special treat. I added some Paradise candied cherries to jazz it up for Christmas, but typically, a drizzle of icing is sufficient!

My brother-in-law spent the night a few weeks ago and I prepared this for breakfast. Like Bill, I think he looked suspiciously at the candied cherries, but the two of them polished off half the tea ring. Katie is also a big fan so when she went to cut a slice for her breakfast and saw how much had disappeared, she was incredulous…but it just goes to show how marvelous this tastes… I think you’ll love it, too.

Thanks to my Sunday Supper friend, Bea, of Galactopdx, for hosting us on this busy, pre-holiday weekend! There are breakfast selections,  appetizers, snacks, side dishes, desserts, as well as drinks featured at today’s Sunday Supper. Take a look what the team is bringing:

Holiday Cream Cheese Tea Ring…#SundaySupper, #HomefortheHolidays

Ingredients

  • Adapted from Rhodes
  • Holiday Cream Cheese Tea Ring...adapted from Rhodes
  • 1 loaf frozen bread dough, thawed
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon butter, at room temperature
  • Icing:
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon butter, at room temperature
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 4 teaspoons milk
  • Red and Green candied cherries, optional

Instructions

  1. With a mixer, beat the cream cheese, sugar, lemon juice and butter till smooth. Set aside.
  2. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough out into a 14 x 8 inch rectangle. Spread cream cheese mixture over dough almost to the edges. Starting with one of the longer sides, roll up dough as if making cinnamon rolls. Gently pinch seam to seal, then seal ends together to make ring. Make cuts every 1 1/2 inches or so...about 7/8 of the way through the ring (from outside towards the middle). Twist each ring on its side so that filling shows.
  3. Place ring on parchment lined baking sheet, cover with plastic wrap and let rise an hour.
  4. Preheat oven to 350º and bake 20-25 minutes, till ring is puffed and golden.
  5. While cooling, make icing by mixing all ingredients together. Place the icing in a quart ziplock bag and snip off corner. Drizzle icing over tea ring. Decorate with red and green candied cherries if desired.

Liz-

Have you tried Kroger’s for the Rhodes dough? I’m pretty sure mine still stocks it.

Really? You could make that as a newlywed? I’m afraid my cooking skills as a newlywed were not as pretty as that. What a gorgeous looking ring and it is so beautifully decorated and FESTIVE! Merry Christmas to you and your family, Liz xx

Liz, that is gorgeous. Our friends Paul and T are coming up in January for a visit, I’ll definitely have to give this a go. If I were to make my own bread dough, would you suggest a sweet egg bread or just plain bread?

Hi, Eva! I’d use a sweet egg dough…it will be amazing!!! xo

Lizzy,
This looks fabulous! I don’t know how you find the time. I’ve been baking non-stop for the past week. I take the week before Christmas as vacation so I can get all my baking done. Now I’m trying to catch up on all my reading.
Merry Christmas.

Your tea ring is beautiful Lizzy. My husband’s grandmother was famous for her tea ring and I’ve said many times I would like to make one in her memory, but it never seems to happen. We don’t have her recipe and that is always my excuse. Seeing your pretty tea ring gives me inspiration. Thank you.

Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas and the happiest of new years.
