White Chocolate Monster Munch {Halloween Chex Mix}
White Chocolate Monster Munch or Halloween Chex Mix is made of cereal, salty nuts, pretzels plus M&M’s tossed in white chocolate. It’s an addictive Halloween treat!
This seasonal Chex Mix Recipe is perfect for Halloween, game day, or any gathering.
Why You Must Make
Everyone in Indianapolis knows about this recipe, it’s the White Chocolate Party Mix featured in our Jr. League cookbook, Winners. I’ve tweaked this “White Chocolate Monster Munch” so all my favorites are in this version of the medley: Rice Chex, pretzels, cashews, and M&M’s.
- Basically, you can add whatever cereal variety, nut, or candy that you’d like. The original recipe calls for Corn Chex, Cheerios, and dry-roasted peanuts! It’s a very versatile recipe.
- The white chocolate coating is addictive! I’d eat shoe leather if it was covered in white chocolate! You can make a holiday version with red and green M&Ms for holiday hostess gifts!
- It’s fun and tasty for a festive party snack.
Ingredient Notes
- White Chocolate – Melted, it’s used to coat all the ingredients. Use Ghirardelli bars for the best flavor. Melted white chocolate chips will also work, and almond bark would be a last resort.
- Rice Chex Cereal – I prefer Rice Chex, but Corn Chex, Wheat Chex, or a combination will also work well.
- Pretzels – Snaps or Sticks
- Cashews – Salted
- M&M’s – Autumn-colored or Halloween-colored
- Sugar Eyeballs – Made by Wilton, optional
Expert Tips
- PRO-Tip: You can make this for any holiday just by purchasing seasonal colored M&Ms. Greens and reds are perfect for Christmas and pastels are ideal for Easter.
- Toss in some mini marshmallows, candy corn, or Reese’s pieces to shake things up.
- Use pecans, peanuts, or mixed nuts instead of cashews. I prefer salted nuts for the sweet-salty combo.
- Other pretzel shapes can be used. My first batch ever was made with pretzel sticks.
- Other Chex cereals work well so grab your favorite. You can also add half Chex and half another favorite cereal like Cheerios, Cap’n Crunch, or Kix.
- It keeps well for up to 2 weeks refrigerated. Make sure to store in an airtight container.
- I’ve stored leftovers in the freezer for a few months. That didn’t keep me from munching on it, though. It even tastes delicious when frozen!
Frequently Asked Questions
Chex Mix is a type of snack food that was first shared in an ad in Life Magazine 1952. But this early version was made with only rice and wheat Chex, melted butter, Worcestershire, table salt, and garlic salt.
Corn Chex, a later variety, was eventually added, and now the ingredient list for classic Chex Mix also contains mixed nuts, pretzels, bagel chips, and seasoned salt instead of table salt plus onion powder.
The traditional Chex mix is made by tossing the cereal and other ingredients with the melted butter and seasonings before placing it on a sheet pan and baking it. With this White Chocolate Chex Mix AKA White Chocolate Monster Munch, the Chex, cashews, Autumn or Halloween-colored milk chocolate M&M’s, and the optional candy eyeballs are simply tossed with melted white chocolate and spread on a sheet pan to cool.
If you can’t find any fall-themed M& M’s, the classic colors would work fine. Feel free to revert back to mixed nuts or use peanuts instead of cashews if that’s your preference. Throwing in some candy corn would be another perfect autumnal ingredient and would definitely mark this as a Halloween treat.
Traditional Chex Mix can be stored for a couple of weeks in an airtight tin on the countertop. But because the white chocolate can get soft at room temperature, this Halloween Chex mix is best stored in the refrigerator. Both kinds of Chex Mix can be frozen for up to 3 months.
There are some health benefits since the cereal is fortified with vitamins and minerals. Nuts provide protein, too. It may be healthier than some other snack foods, but it’s not considered a healthy snack.
