S’mores Brownies in Jars
This s’mores inspired dessert, S’mores Brownies in Jars, was a snap to prepare. A layer of graham cracker crust was topped with some fudgy brownie dough and baked in cute little mason jars.
Marshmallows filled the rest of the jars and were broiled to give that characteristic roasted s’mores look. You can also make these using a boxed brownie mix, which will most likely fill more than 4 jars.
S’mores Desserts
We spent many summer vacations with my in-laws up in Wisconsin. Boating, fishing, Packer worshiping were all part of our adventures up north. Come sundown, we’d get a roaring campfire going and spend the last minutes of twilight searching for the perfect marshmallow roasting sticks.
Making s’mores by squeezing a charred and gooey marshmallow and a piece of milk chocolate between two graham crackers was part of our nightly routine. But even better than traditional campfire s’mores are s’mores desserts like these layered brownies.
Is It Safe to Bake in Mason Jars?
Mason jars are made for canning, so they can tolerate temperatures. Buy a good quality canning jar to ensure they stand up to baking.
How to Store Mason Jar Desserts
Thankfully, these desserts in jars are self-sealing, so it’s easy to store the leftovers. Just screw on the caps and store them in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or the freezer for up to 3 months. Bring to room temperature then gently warm if desired to soften the marshmallows.
What is Jarcuterie?
A new fad with the global pandemic in full swing is to serve appetizers in jars, like cheese sticks, crackers, and cured meat. It’s much safer than hovering around a cheeseboard with many hands reaching in to grab a nibble. Other ideas include veggie sticks and dip, cheese puffs, or anything on skewers! Jarcuterie is a term that comes from blending charcuterie, AKA a cheeseboard, with jars.

Make brownie batter by melting chocolate and butter in microwave safe bowl, zapping and stirring at 30 second increments till smooth and melted. Mix in sugar and vanilla and let cool a few minutes. Mix in eggs, then salt and flour.
Divide batter evenly between the four jars. Bake for approximately 30 minutes (time will vary depending on diameter of jars). Start checking at 25 minutes, making sure centers look cooked before removing from the oven. You can use a toothpick to check doneness.
Let cool about 15 minutes.

Brian’s mother is, amazingly, a two time lung cancer survivor. My life-long best friend, however, lost her mother to lung cancer last year. Neither of these women smoked and it strikes a sour note with me when I hear people make that assumption. Somehow lung cancer becomes the victim’s fault! Anyway, sorry to get on the soap box. I know you loved your FIL and I’m deeply sorry for your family’s loss. I think remembering him over these delicious looking treat jars would be wonderful!
Lovely post, Liz. I love s’mores brownies & even better when you get your own jar!
It’s been so sad to read about how cancer has affected you, Kim, and countless others, Liz. I hope that writing these posts have been cathartic. I know that your words are providing invaluable comfort to others who are going through it right now. I’ve known many wonderful people who were taken too soon by cancer, but I’ve been lucky enough that it hasn’t been anyone as close to me as a parent or sibling. I think this is another lovely tribute to your dear FIL and your s’mores in a jar look ooey gooey delicious!
Nothing make a memory like s’mores.
Can’t wait to try these Liz! I love smores!
I hope you like them, Alison!!!
I thin this wonderful dessert treat is a great way to remember a lost loved one, to be enjoyed together and help go through the emotions with support. Wow over 600 entries, here goes nothing!
I am so sorry to hear about your father-in-law. Lung cancer, and all forms really, is such a horrible thing to go through with your family.
I have never tried baking something in a jar, but these look so yummy I will have to bake some up for my next dinner party. Thank you for sharing!
Great idea for a smore’s dessert Liz. Sorry about your father in law. It’s never easy losing a loved one. Cancer affects all of us these days, I don’t know of one person who hasn’t had a family member who wasn’t affected by cancer. What a nice post to share with those who want to read others stories, thanks for sharing this. I already have a Kitchen Aid stand mixer so if I won it I would give it to my mom.
Lizzy,
This post is a wonderful way to promote awareness and honor your Father-in-Law. I hope you and your family is holding up okay.

These stories break my heart. Raising awareness is a fantastic way to help others though. Kudos to you and the others for doing this (next time I hope someone tells me so I can join in). The brownies in a jar look amazing as well. Dudette will love them!
I love anything that’s made in a jar. And anything that involves s’mores. LOVE this!!!
