Fudgy Chocolate Brownies

This is my go to fudgy brownie recipe. If you’ve ever had brownies at my house that were dipped in granulated sugar, you’ve had these. This recipe for Fudgy Chocolate Brownies is adapted from one in Martha Stewart’s Baking Handbook. There’s nothing simpler than a one bowl recipe! Minimal dishes with maximum chocolate fulfillment!

I made these easy one bowl brownies for a gathering of volunteers who helped with a big fund  raising projects.  Dipping the bottoms in sugar prevents them from sticking to each other and the serving dish. I added them to a tray with lemon bars and fruit. Something for everyone! Cut into small pieces, they are one bite nibbles…and assuage some of the guilt from diving into a dessert platter. I hope you will consider these for your next gathering. They do not disappoint…I hope these fudgy chocolate brownies will become a favorite of your family, too.

Fudgy Chocolate Brownies
Adapted from Martha Stewart's Baking Handbook
  • 1 stick butter, plus more for pan
  • 8 oz semi-sweet chocolate
  • 1½ c sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 t vanilla
  • ¾ c flour
  • ¼ t salt
  1. Preheat oven to 350º. Butter an 8" square baking pan. Line the pan with parchment paper, leaving a 1" overhang on two sides. Set aside. Place butter and chocolate in microwave safe bowl and microwave gently until butter and chocolate are melted (30 seconds x 3, stirring in between sessions). Let cool to room temperature.
  2. Stir sugar into chocolate till combined. Whisk in eggs one at a time, then vanilla. Fold in flour and salt. Bake until cake tester comes out of center with just a few moist crumbs, 40-45 min. Cool completely on rack. Run knife around perimeter of pan and lift brownies out of pan using parchment. Cut into 2 inch squares. May dip bottoms in granulated sugar to stack.
Note: For easier slicing, place pan in freezer for one hour before cutting.
    Total time: 2 hours

        1. There are mo stupid questions!

          I keep a good supply of Ghirardelli chocolate bars in my pantry…they are each 4 ounces (weight), so I use two. So if you have any semisweet chocolate, I’d go by weight. Chocolate chips will work in a pinch, but I like the bar chocolate much better. Let me know how you like them 🙂
