Inspired by the French after school snack, pain au chocolat, Dorie’s twist is to use Nutella and add a bitter orange marmalade to the buttered and broiled toast. I only made one slice from this 4 serving recipe…as I have the kids who like their peanut butter sandwiches sans jelly…and I won’t even mention what they think about nuts! These are the same children who were unimpressed with Nutella when it was served with their breakfast buffet in Florence…and they have half my DNA???
Even though I could have eaten the whole jar of Nutella with a spoon, this didn’t wow me. I now know I prefer my Nutella without marmalade and my marmalade without Nutella.

Sound yummy with my coffee !!

nutella + toastred bread = perfect breakfast!
Positively wonderfully evil. =)
Seems to be Nutella Mania going on. I do like it but not entirely crazy about it but having it with some bitter marmalade? I wonder if it’ll go with the mandarin marmalade I’d made? Sounds like a delightful combination …. no prizes for guessing what I’ll be getting from the supermarket tomorrow
That is a very clever way to make a rich treat. I am not much of a marmalade fan…and seeings I cannot have bread, I’ll just have the jar of Nutella and a spoon, please.
A brillant sweet treat! love it!
This does look delicious. The whole marmalade and Nutella thing I am on the fence about though. While some fruit flavors may be good with Nutella I am not sure marmalade is it.
Your pictures do look amazing! Glad I got your feedback on this recipe.
I love the pairing with the slices of oranges. Biting into the slices of oranges and eating the tartine will be something I will enjoy.
Yummy ! You made the plain bread looks sophisticated
I’m not a Nutella fan, but this toast looks very appetising.
Beautiful! Absolutely right, what a yummy way to start off the day.
absolutely nice!! Lizzy!
(now someones will really tease me (not you) but I dont have time to post savoy recipes, all my last are sweet (lol) sigh!!
fancy
We paired ours with cherry preserves, because, well, why not
It’s fun to see everyone’s sweet treats this week!
Did someone say Nutella?!
Looks delicious!
Awww.. Nutella. This sounds delish. Oh, and Im still in awe over those Twice Baked potatoes too! Mmmmm
I am not sure how I feel about marmalade with nutella either – perhaps a case of two great things diminishing one another? I would love it with something with raspberries though, I am sure of it! Looks lovely anyway!
I adore hazelnut and am willing to forgive its association with chocolate simply because it alters the taste enough to make it palatable. This looks delicious (even to me).
I vote for Nutella too, those chocolate hazelnut spreads are extremely popular in my country too and we have tones of them
Sometimes I just mixed them with some whipped cream and make the icing for some cake that way
And a slice orange has always been my fave decoration, it opens up my appetite whenever I see it!
Ha! I had to nix the marmalade and go with berry jam. And, since I was indulging, I made full Nutella slices as well. The orange slices on the side were genius.
You crack me up with your ‘delicious for some’ comment! Your photos are lovely and your Nutella Tartine looks wonderfully scrumptious to me!
It may not have been what you were hoping, but it sure does look beautiful!
Could it be you would rather used a different marmalade/fruit spread? It looks wonderful either way!
Looks so easy and yet so delicious!
This looks tempting beyond words. I love how you have presented this. It looks so delicious. Stunning pictures!
Now, who doesn’t like Nutella?? My family is a huge fan of Nutella & this makes a great snack!

I know this is a sin but I’m not the hugest fan of Nutella. I love to bake with it though, this sounds like something that I would really enjoy!
YES PLEASE! I am in love with Nutella!
This looks absolutely amazing!! Love this!
Delicious! I love Nutella!
Chocolate and orange goes so well together. I am sure this tastes heavenly
They sure look super yummy!

Orange and Nutella plus bread= heaven!
Damn you have found the key that makes me study harder for my exams!!
I am with you on the Nutella without the marmalade thing. Your presentation looks so tempting – I would love to try it anyways
It’s great that you get to try new recipes through this. I can’t see myself eating something like this BUT if you switched out the marmalade with peanut butter, I’d be all set! Still looks pretty!
Completely mouth watering Liz. Like, totally.
Whelp, not every pairing is a match made in heaven
Certainly looks yummy tho!
It’s so blissfully easy – you can have a life! Love the Nutella with oranges. My daughter won’t touch Nutella and my son never wanted it in the house because he couldn’t keep his hands off of it.
Hello. This article was really interesting, particularly because I was browsing for thoughts on this subject last couple of days.

this looks wonderful
Mmm, mmm, I wish I could eat this for breakfast every day!
A wonderful sweet! love it!u have a nice space vth lovely recipes……….
Nutella and marmalade sounds ‘special’. I am not a big fan of nutella, maybe marmalade will make it better, though I doubt it. No comments from Bill, I suppose he was unimpressed.
Lizzy, this tart looks perfectly delicious! Lovely photos and a great recipe to go with it. Stay warm this weekend!
That looks very delicious!
I am from Germany and introduced my American-born children to Nutella. So instead of the typical PB & J they eat their peanut butter sandwiches with Nutella. It’s a bit like Reese’s peanut butter cups on bread. They’d eat it every day at every meal if I’d let them. I prefer my Nutella straight on a traditional Vollkornbrot (which I haven’t been able to find in the U.S.)
What an utterly perfect snack–I often order tartines for a light meal when I’m in Europe. This looks like a lovely sweet treat!
I’m with you on spoon feeding myself Nutella. The other day, I warmed some up and used it like hot fudge on a sundae. Pretty yummy!
Oh, I was so hoping the marmalade and the nutella would work. Too bad.
I had to laugh at the DNA comment. I wonder the same thing sometimes with my own kids (if they hadn’t come from my own body)… I would seriously wonder about them.
LOL!
Have a great weekend!!
Oh my! This sounds like something my husband would wolf down! I am not a huge fan of marmalade or nutella, but you sure know how to make it look tempting, Lizzy!
Though this looks delicious, I guess I’ll enjoy it more without the orange marmalade. Nutella is enough to make me happy!
Enjoy your weekend, Lizzy!
So simple, but so good! But then, anything with Nutella is tough to beat
Dear Lizzy, This is delicious. I have yet to meet someone who does not LOVE Nutella! This is a recipe that is easy and delicious a perfect combo. Blessings my friend, Catherine xo
Oh. Yes. *Please*.
All of you FFWD participants are killing me today with this nutella goodness!!
What a yummy treat, Lizzy! Nutella with your amazing white bread. Can’t think of any other treat that is more mouthwatering, and totally satisfying:DDD
BTW-I have a couple of awards waiting for you to claim!
Congratulations…well deserved, my dear friend:DDD
Who doesn’t adore nutella! The tartine looks super.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Angie
Nutella and marmalade are an interesting combination. Marmalade to temper the sweetness while still getting a chocolate hit – I like the idea!
Oh boy. I want this right now1
Oh my word! Heavenly!
Haha – your kids were unimpressed with nutella?!
Funny, my spouse said he prefers his chocolate and jelly combination in the form of a donut! Since I don’t do chocolate, I also prefer my marmalade seperately.
Sorry this one did not wow you – I strangely enjoyed it but thought I’d hate it!
It looks delicious, but I can understand why you didn’t love it. Orange and chocolate don’t work together well for me either. Make it strawberry or raspberry though and then you’re talking!
LOVE NUTELLA! and that tartine?! Perfect on a weekend brunch
I’m a Nutella fan and I’m also with you on the marmalade. The pictures are great.
Woah! They are such amazing treat to the eyes!

What an interesting idea, not sure if I would want them together either. It looks great though and bet my niece would enjoy
Lovely pictures! This is the first FFwD recipe that I really didn’t care for. I think I didn’t like the combo of marmalade and Nutella. I should have left the Nutella off. Oh, well. Glad you enjoyed it.
I really liked this but maybe I wouldn’t have if my orange marmalade had worked out. Instead I used raspberry wine jelly and it was good. Seems like several people didn’t care for the chocolate/orange mix.
I’ve seen some Nutella recipes for the past few days but I still enjoy exploring with new Nutella recipes. I buy many jars from Costco (how dangerous!) and I need many recipes… =P Thanks for sharing!
This is still my favourite FFWD recipe (or “un recipe) so far!
LOL! Well, I’m sure you have complete control with keeping marmalade and Nutella separated!!
Great job!
I have been meaning to tell you lately that I have been keeping up with your posts but Mei has made it nearly impossible to leave you a comment and your past few posts have been really great! I enjoyed reading them all and plan to borrow some recipes from you soon!
Well, it sounds like you are a purist! I can’t say I blame you…I would probably agree. I hope you had a great start to your week. I spent mine baking and writing…a much needed day of rest. Thank you for sharing yet another delicious post!
