Nutella Tartine~

by Liz Berg on February 10, 2012

Inspired by the French after school snack, pain au chocolat, Dorie’s twist is to use Nutella and add a bitter orange marmalade to the buttered and broiled toast. I only made one slice from this 4 serving recipe…as I have the kids who like their peanut butter sandwiches sans jelly…and I won’t even mention what they think about nuts! These are the same children who were unimpressed with Nutella when it was served with their breakfast buffet in Florence…and they have half my DNA???

Even though I could have eaten the whole jar of Nutella with a spoon, this didn’t wow me. I now know I prefer my Nutella without marmalade and my marmalade without Nutella.

You can find this simple and delicious (for some!) recipe here.

Seems to be Nutella Mania going on. I do like it but not entirely crazy about it but having it with some bitter marmalade? I wonder if it’ll go with the mandarin marmalade I’d made? Sounds like a delightful combination …. no prizes for guessing what I’ll be getting from the supermarket tomorrow :D

That is a very clever way to make a rich treat. I am not much of a marmalade fan…and seeings I cannot have bread, I’ll just have the jar of Nutella and a spoon, please.

This does look delicious. The whole marmalade and Nutella thing I am on the fence about though. While some fruit flavors may be good with Nutella I am not sure marmalade is it.
Your pictures do look amazing! Glad I got your feedback on this recipe.

I love the pairing with the slices of oranges. Biting into the slices of oranges and eating the tartine will be something I will enjoy.

I am not sure how I feel about marmalade with nutella either – perhaps a case of two great things diminishing one another? I would love it with something with raspberries though, I am sure of it! Looks lovely anyway!

I adore hazelnut and am willing to forgive its association with chocolate simply because it alters the taste enough to make it palatable. This looks delicious (even to me). :)

Reply

DEZMOND February 10, 2012 at 1:37 pm

I vote for Nutella too, those chocolate hazelnut spreads are extremely popular in my country too and we have tones of them :) Sometimes I just mixed them with some whipped cream and make the icing for some cake that way :)
And a slice orange has always been my fave decoration, it opens up my appetite whenever I see it!

Ha! I had to nix the marmalade and go with berry jam. And, since I was indulging, I made full Nutella slices as well. The orange slices on the side were genius.

Nutella and marmalade sounds ‘special’. I am not a big fan of nutella, maybe marmalade will make it better, though I doubt it. No comments from Bill, I suppose he was unimpressed.

I am from Germany and introduced my American-born children to Nutella. So instead of the typical PB & J they eat their peanut butter sandwiches with Nutella. It’s a bit like Reese’s peanut butter cups on bread. They’d eat it every day at every meal if I’d let them. I prefer my Nutella straight on a traditional Vollkornbrot (which I haven’t been able to find in the U.S.)

Oh, I was so hoping the marmalade and the nutella would work. Too bad. :( I had to laugh at the DNA comment. I wonder the same thing sometimes with my own kids (if they hadn’t come from my own body)… I would seriously wonder about them. :) LOL!

Have a great weekend!!

I really liked this but maybe I wouldn’t have if my orange marmalade had worked out. Instead I used raspberry wine jelly and it was good. Seems like several people didn’t care for the chocolate/orange mix.
