Gorgonzola Apple Quiche~

by Liz Berg on February 3, 2012

This week’s French Friday’s with Dorie selection featured a combination of flavors I’ve never eaten before…Gorgonzola with apples.  Not certain if the family would go for it, I planned to take it to my knitting group this morning.  Hubby actually loves blue cheese in salads, so I had hopes that he wouldn’t poo-poo this dish…I figured as long as I didn’t call it quiche, it had a chance.  He is, unfortunately, a product of that 70′s group of real men that don’t eat quiche.  Gorgonzola tart….maybe, but quiche no.  Yeah, I haven’t figured him out either…

A buttery prebaked shell was filled with sauteed onions, diced apples and Gorgonzola. A mixture of cream and eggs was poured on top before baking. This smelled marvelous as it cooked away in the oven…and the results yummy, but I tasted onions over the apple and blue cheese. I’d consider upping the Gorgonzola for more flavor next time.

This recipe can be found in Dorie Greenspan’s Around My French Table….a cookbook worth your investment!

Christiane, this photo is for you…my table is actually just
an old wooden cabinet door…just slightly wider than this
platter.

Yeah I loved this but I was expecting to. Cheese and apples is one of my favourite combinations ever and this did not disappoint. Happy Friday Liz!

Lizzy.. you made me laugh.. he’ll eat a tart not a quiche! LOL! Men are so funny. This does look amazing… you make everything looks so pretty and scrumptious. I love that you’re apart of a knitting group. How cool are you! I’m such a bore in comparison.. I belong to the clean plate club… that’s all. :)

I think I could eat half that quiche without batting any eye. What a perfectly wonderful combination. It’s funny how some men, my husband included, think quiche is “women’s food.”

Another one I can only dream of eating, I always wonder what the taste of onions are or the draw to put them in so many foods and normally the food taste fine to me without them but people that know what they taste like say this is bland. I hate having food allergies when things look this grea to want to try! This is a work of art that dark crust is wonderful!

I’m supposed to be getting Dudette ready for school, but I HAD to come here first to see if you put up the picture. Now I just have to try and look past that amazing tart to what’s below. Too bad the onions were predominant. Thanks for the tip.

I do love that door. The color is beautiful and the panels lovely. Thanks for showing me more of it.

Very interesting tart creation here. I have tried apples and cheese together, but not in this manner. It does look delicious and the gorgonzola is a great choice. I would say this is one of the better recipes out of that book. Your pictures are stunning as usual Liz.
Well done.

Oh yeah! More cheesey stuff! Yum! Cheese and fruits go so well together. This is great! I also love blue cheese.
Just call a quiche something else other than a quiche ad the guys will eat it. The name is just too prissy for them but they’ll drive a thing called a “Porsche”. Ok, I’m rambling … never mind.

We loved this one but I did a few tweeks. I swapped out the onion for a milder shallot, used a local blue cheese and added a handful of walnuts. My quiche was rich, probably better served in small slices as an appetizer. I love the shape of your quiche as well as the design you made with the apple slices.
How cool you’re in a knitting group!

We loved this quiche and luckily for me the german men have not yet heard that they are not supposed to like quiche because I had no complaints in my household. I thought that the amount of cheese was good, but I did mine in an 8 inch round tart pan which made everything a little snugger.

A very interesting combination! In France people sometimes have pears with blue cheese, so why not apples? I have never tasted both together, but it sounds like a wonderful idea and your presentation is beautiful!
I think many French people would call it tarte and not quiche (it’s a long discussion between those who think the only quiche is quiche lorraine and those who think every thicker tart with cream and egg mixture is a quiche ;-) )
