I’ve had this yearning to make puff pastry…I’m not sure why, as I can buy an excellent, all butter one at the market about 5 minutes from my doorstep. Well, maybe the $11.99 for 14 ounces has something to do with it.

I invited my friends over one morning to compare my homemade puff pastry to the delicious Dufour brand. We made these delectable pinwheels for the taste test. Next, I demonstrated this apple tart with my homemade version. The recipe was designed for breakfast, but I had to have a couple slices after dinner. The apples, cream cheese and flaky pastry combination glazed with maple syrup was nothing short of fabulous.

There is a name brand puff pastry that’s available to almost all of us..but it doesn’t contain a speck of real butter. It’s OK in a pinch, but your results will be far superior with a premium brand…check the label the next time you’re shopping or, even better, mix up a batch for yourself.
